Have you seen the sidewalk on Library Way in NYC?

If you haven’t, on your next trip to the New York Public Library on Fifth Avenue, walk along 41st Street. You’ll have a perfect view of the building (look up) and plenty of inspirational quotes about reading, writing, and literature (look down) along the way.

Garson Kanin’s most famous quote, from his hit play “Born Yesterday,” is there on the sidewalk.

Toni 3/9/17

Garson Kanin, who broke into show business as a saxophone-playing high school dropout and went on to write ”Born Yesterday,” direct ”The Diary of Anne Frank” and become the co-writer of two classic Tracy-Hepburn movies, died at his home in Manhattan in 1999.

To stoke your desire to participate in our Democracy, hold a Huggle/Haggle/Huddle. This list was generated at a recent meet-up at our house.

  • The election of Donald Trump can either stoke or sap our desire to participate in our Democracy. To help stoke, here are some ideas that got chewed at a recent Huddle/Haggle/Huggle:
  • Call the House Judiciary Committee (202-225-3951) and ask them to support the “Resolution of Inquiry” into Trump’s conflict of interst and his team’s contact with Russian officials.
  • The most under-rated of the First Amendment liberties is the right to “petition the Government for a redress of grievances.” Call, write (letters and post-cards), e-mail, show up at the offices.
  • Download CALL THE HALLS: Contacting Your Representatives the Smart Way (buff.ly/2j3oTMf)
  • The main phone line for Congress is 202-225-3121. (If busy, 202-224-3121) To get a Senator’s direct line: http://bit.ly/2kkoOAo.  To get a House of Representative’s direct line: http://house.gov/representatives.
  • There’s an app for the above!! Go to the App Store and get “5 Calls”
  • Rather write to Congress? Type your address on democracy.io.
  • Michael Moore has daily call and write updates on his Twitter and Facebook pages. facebook.com/MMFlint  @MMFlint   www.michaelmoore.com
  • Find your closest swing district to support. (https://swingleft.org)
  • Have an accurate list of names, addresses, twitter accts., e-mails of Congress (Cabinet, President, etc) at the ready. Sources for this: https://www.govtrack.us/congress/members/map.
  • Follow representatives and get updates: popvox.com. Also Countable.
  • Know the issue before calling or writing. It’s what’s inside your message that counts. Focus on one issue per call, etc. Focus on one or two issues for your own sanity. Robocalls and form e-mails don’t work.
  • Support community-building activities in your community to begin to bridge the gap.Keep track of Rallies, Petitions, Meetings.
  • Go to a Congressional office and speak to the aides about the issues.
  • Consider forming a little rapid response team for when quick action is necessary?
  • The scripts in the many e-mails offering up petitions to sign often contain concise wording and background issues. Instructive.
  • Be part of a greater whole: ACLU, Southern Poverty Law, Planned Parenthood, Black Lives Matter, Democratic Socialists of America, Amnesty International, ERA Action, MoveOn.org. act.moveon.org.
