owl in west cornwall

Hooting “who cooks for you who cooks for you all”

along the Housatonic in West Cornwall alerts us to the Barred Owl.

A passing motorist stops to take our picture

w/ the sleepy owl peering over Ray’s right shoulder.

During the picture-taking I hear the whine of a Sapsucker

simultaneous to spotting the young man’s

Trump bumper sticker.

I fight an urge to commence bloviating about whining Republican candidates.

A hoot.

  1. Here’s a wide-awake life story, Morgan. Right before the glory of realizing how close we were to the owl:
Marie and I were craning our necks, peering through our binoculars, trying to ID a LLB (Little Brown Bird) on a horizontal branch, next to a fir, above the orange bush, to the left of the oak, etc and etc. Ray taps us on the shoulder and points. Ronnie chuckles. Closer to us than the LLB and also grinning at us is this luscious Barred Owl. It’s good to be humbled. Our vision was, dare I say, binocular for a moment and our wide-awake life not so wide. Momentarily.
