Solidarity is what I feel as I spy the Yellow-throated Vireo
perched on a lower branch of a tall oak,
w/ his bright yellow throat, breast, eye spectacles,
& two white wing bars,
methodically hunting bugs amongst the twigs.
It’s his slow, husky, & incessant warning to stay away from the thick-walled cup nest
camouflaged in spider web & moss that resonates.
I feel that way about my lichen-crusted bower too.
PATTY Caveat: But it’s compassion I feel for the 60 million refugees who no longer have their own bowers, lichen-crusted or no.
UN: ‘Dangerous New Era’ With Record 60 Million Refugees Worldwide
“One in every 122 humans is now either a refugee, internally displaced, or seeking asylum.” So, unlike for the Yellow-throated Vireo we human citizens of the world are in an “age of unprecedented mass displacement; we need an unprecedented humanitarian response and a renewed global commitment to tolerance and protection for people fleeing conflict and persecution.” (UN High Commissioner for Refugees António Guterres)
