Note: The term “normal school” originated in the early 16th century from the French école normale. The French concept of an école normale was to provide a school with classrooms to model teaching practices to its student teachers. The children being taught, their teachers, and the teachers of the teachers were often together in the same building. Although a laboratory school, it was the official school for the children.

  1. My mother (Lillian Grace Main Babcock) graduated from Willimantic Normal School in
1930 at the age of 18! From there she taught in a one-room school in Stonington. (I
think!) and then in a one-room school in Sterling CT. where she met and married my
    father. Small world, Toni

    1. So, did you read the fine print? Mom, with 2 years of normal school at age 18, earned a certification to not only teach primary grades but also be a principal! It states that as long as there is a superintendent/supervising agent somewhere, she was good to go. I think I would have jumped at that. I wonder why she didn’t. Lillian Grace, love that name.
