La Coruña is an ancient city founded by Hercules,

so the locals in this lively urban port tell me.  CIMG3694

The 180-foot Tower of Hercules is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Spain. It’s the oldest Roman/European lighthouse in the world which, since the end of the 1st century, continues to guide ships crossing the Atlantic Ocean. CIMG3696The tower stands on a rocky hillock, dominating the northern end of the peninsula in La Coruña. The story the locals like to tell is that Hercules slew the giant tyrant Geryon after three days and three nights of continuous battle. At the end of the battle, Hercules buried the giant’s head and decreed that a town be built on that spot.

The tower endures. So does the myth.
