This will do mutters Mrs. Cowbird
& she lays an egg into a nest crowded with House Finch eggs.
Mrs HF returns & stretches her fluffy duff to include this strange huge egg.
Eggs hatch. No one notices when the CB kid tips the HF kids overboard.
The HF couple ferry food to their giant
& even when it fledges to the driveway below,
they feed him still.
Will these foster parents continue to nurture him?
This they will do.
Substitute House Finches for these Chipping Sparrows and this is what I witnessed and inspired the poem above:
Baby Cowbird leaves Black-capped Chickadee’s nest:
As the season progresses, the bigger baby in this hanging planter House Finch nest pushes the others out.
