John Travolta, How Would You Mispronounce “Sharp-shinned Hawk?” Not to “Gamify” (or “travoltify”) this 420 Character, 9-Line Poem by Patty where I juxtapose the bird and human world, the one informing or at least bringing up questions to ponder about the other.

Putin, agile Sharp-shinned Hawk, bursts from his hidden perch,

grabs my perky junco mid-backwards-jump-sunflower-seed-scratch,

lugs her to my tree stump, plucks it, & feasts.

My feeders, berry bushes, tall grasses, cut-branch piles are for songbirds;

it’s MY democracy.

& yet AGAIN this Sharpie pursues

-& with his long toes and talons, impales-a House Finch.

IS he a bully, or is this his version of democracy?

My Putin.

  1. HI Theodore Granite, the Travoltafied-you–

    (I loved seeing John Travolta the other night, by the way. It reminded me of an earlier me. 🙂 )

    But you are so right, there’s stress in the food chain. We need to heed and keep count of our chief carnivores, or we’re going to have, what do they call it, trophic cascade? Someone? Anyone out there? Is that the phrase for when the food chain collapses?

    A couple of days ago the bird guru helped us find a Great Horned Owl pair who are obviously roosting as a couple, but, for some reason have opted NOT to make a nest and get it on. As I craned my neck to peer at this magnificent creature, I was awed at the majesty and disturbed by the inactivity.

    1. Patty,
      Whassup with these birds? ‘My’ osprey, who roosted and fished from the mangrove every day since Jan, moved to, I think :), the man-made platform at the head of the bridge. Not that I can tell one from the other, so this is a total guess on my part. But this osprey,too, swaggers around like Vinnie Barbarino, perches and fishes with a partner, yet not one stick or twig to indicate they have a future together. These kids, meh! Keep an eye on those owls and report back.
