IT’S A MENORAH, IT’S A TURKEY, NO IT’S A MENURKEY!

Thanksgivukkah?  huh?

In case you haven’t heard, there’s a once-in-an-eternity event about to happen ~ Hanukkah and Thanksgiving are celebrating an extremely rare convergence. That’s because the Jewish calendar repeats on a 19-year cycle, and Thanksgiving repeats on a 7-year cycle. (Math is not my thing either, but stick with me.)

Thanksgiving wasn’t formally established by President Lincoln until 1863, which is why Thanksgivukkah has never happened before. And it may not happen again because the Jewish calendar is very slowly getting out of sync with the solar calendar, at a rate of 4 days per 1000 years. ( That’s taking into account 2,000 years of calendar tinkering.)

2013 is the only time Hanukkah will ever overlap (in our lifetime) with Thanksgiving. Pumpkin latkes, anyone? If the Jewish calendar is never modified in any way, then it will slowly move forward through the Gregorian calendar, until it loops all the way back to where it is now. So, Hanukkah will again fall on Thursday, 11/28 ~ in the year 79811.

Rubber duckies come with warnings,

like this little loose tea infuser,

but I want such signage attached to Diane Ravitch‘s comments

disparaging school testing: She says, “don’t pay attention to them.”

But if I do, I see that while tests of U.S. students are improving,

we’re not catching up to other developed countries,

and we KNOW that poor academic achievement

endangers a country’s economic growth.

Rubber Duckies.

Much as I love Sam Cooke and this song, it just won’t work if we don’t know stuff, and if we don’t know that we don’t know.
