1ST DRAFTS COME FROM “JUST” MOVING MY PEN ACROSS THE PAGE.

I WRITE AND WAIT TO SEE THE IDEAS THAT EMERGE.

IT’S LIKE WHAT ROSS OHLENDORF’S DOES

AS HE MOVES THROUGH HIS OLD-TIMEY ROCKING CHAIR PITCH:

OVER THE HEAD, SPLIT HANDS,

IT’S OLD FASHIONED; LOOSENS HIM UP, GIVES HIM A RYTHMN,

FREES HIS MIND, AND LETS HIS BODY FIGURE OUT THE BEST PATH TO TAKE

TO THROW THE BALL WHERE HE WANTS IT TO GO. GIVES MOMENTUM.

1ST DRAFTS.

  1. Remember that guy, Peter Elbow? He taught us that just moving your hand across the page–or now, across the keyboard–stirs up those neurons and synapses and gets the current flowing. Free writing is what William Zinnser was talking about, too, when he said that all good writing in its final form–composition–needs to have lots of exploratory writing/drafts behind it. Well, anywho I love the permission it gives me to farfetch on paper or on the computer. (Hi Morgan!)
