Maurice Sendak was not a religious person. Even though he was brought up strictly kosher, he says it never made sense to him. An afterlife? Nope, not a believer. But he does expect to see his brother again.  Maybe in the Land of Wild Things.

“I’m not unhappy about becoming old. I’m not unhappy about what must be. It makes me cry only when I see my friends go before me and life is emptied . . . It’s harder for us nonbelievers.”

– brother Jack and Maurice

“You know who my gods are, who I believe in fervently? Herman Melville, Emily Dickinson — she’s probably the top — Mozart, Shakespeare, Keats. These are wonderful gods who have gotten me through the narrow straits of life.”

Oh, Maurice.  You’re one of mine, probably the top.  Bless you.
