My neighborhood hotspot has small plates and long tables. Upbeat, hassle-free, welcoming. It’s where my writing group meets.

when the wind blows and the snow falls and there’s not a hint of spring in the air, picture windows draw in even the palest slant of light ~ the next best thing to being outside.

WHAT THEY TALKED ABOUT

Droll well-informed discourse about almost drowning in a brook to save a dog, traveling with zip lock bags for underwear and barfing, migranes, bagels with peanut butter, Owl by Ellen Bryant Voigt, the word obligato*, Gertrude Stein who made a fetish of repetition, the word obligato*, (interlude ~ a swoosh of nostalgia), visual pixels, Medicine Wheel, Facebook, working at home, deadlines, lyrical responses to readings, the word obligato*, a writing course, sestinas, Isabel’s first chapter, Ted Kooser, poetry and porcelain thrones.

*At some point in the conversation, it’s appears that the group became fixated on this word. Anyone wish to contest this? My best guess ~ it probably happened.

  2. I had a post planned for today with reference to one of yours w/Isabel on Bird by Bird, last month…couldn’t remember the origin of that story, for how she got the title, and had to look it up in your post! If that sees the light of day perhaps you will too 🙂 Thanks for this lovely snapshot of your time together. Makes me wish I had my own community like this, in person. Best, – Bill

    1. Bill, do this, really, I mean it : start a group or find one. Donald Murray said the only writing group he would join is one that makes him want to write. My group does and it is impossibly joyous. We verbivores meet weekly, pages in hand. We listen, comment, and share. It is the toolbox, and heart, of my writing life. It’s chock-a-block with feisty grammarians, sage advisors, and prolific memoirists. There’s even a logolept or two. We write with passion, take risks, and yes, hoot and holler. Join a group that makes you want to write. You’ll be glad you did. Toni

    1. I know what you mean, Michelle. I love our virtual WP community, it helps us zip, glug and spule our way through writing and beyond but it can’t replace the wild laughter, bawling, keening and the rolling in the aisles of time spent in long talks with good peeps.Toni
