For sailors, the nuts and bolts that hold a ship together are miles of twisted fiber threads. On my favorite sailing ship, the StarClipper, Yuri doesn’t repair a seam failure with a packet of rusty sail needles.  He’s a sailmaker-cum-rigger. He oversees topsails, gallants and staysails; a spanker, jigger and jibs, belaying pins and blocks, winches and spars; yards, sheets, ratlines and shrouds.

A brilliantly dexterous guy, the teak deck of a fully-rigged tall ship, and the gentle roll of the sea ~ a perfect storm of pleasures.

  1. Love that jumbo sewing machine! On the tall ships I’ve sailed on, sail repairs are done by hand — which obviously take a lot longer … Great photos.
